Marathi Typing Test: Free WPM & Accuracy (InScript)
This Marathi typing test measures your typing speed and accuracy in Devanagari script, using the same transparent three-figure scoring approach used across every language on this site: Gross WPM (every character typed, correct or not, at the standard 5-characters-per-word rate), Net WPM (only correctly typed characters count, full penalty for every mistake), and SSC-convention WPM (the widely used "5% mistakes ignorable" allowance common to Indian government typing-skill exams). We show all three together with a plain-language explanation, because we believe a typing score should be something you can check and understand, not a single unexplained number.
Marathi shares the Devanagari script with Hindi, and this test uses exactly the same InScript keyboard layout — the government-standard, CDAC-defined key mapping — for both, meaning practice built on the Hindi test on this site transfers directly to Marathi typing and vice versa, since the underlying key positions for shared Devanagari characters are identical. Marathi does add its own additional characters (such as the retroflex ळ) beyond standard Hindi Devanagari, which this test's InScript layout and passage library account for directly.
Marathi typing certification has a long, well-established tradition in Maharashtra through Government Commercial Certificate (GCC) typing examinations, alongside MPSC and other state government exams that test Marathi typing speed as part of their selection process — this is a genuinely mature, exam-driven category, not a niche one. This test runs entirely in Unicode, with no legacy pre-Unicode font required and nothing to install; we self-host the display font so the page renders correctly the moment it loads.
Passages are drawn from a growing library of real Marathi text, not one recycled paragraph, so repeated practice genuinely builds skill instead of passage memorisation. Choose a duration, start typing, and track your live WPM and accuracy as you go — whether you're preparing for a GCC typing certificate exam, an MPSC-administered post, or simply want to type Marathi faster and more accurately, this test gives you an honest, transparently scored answer.
How to use this typing test
- Choose a test duration — 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes — matching your target exam or certificate requirement.
- Click "Start test" and type the Marathi passage shown on screen exactly as it appears, using the InScript keyboard layout.
- Watch your live WPM and accuracy update in real time as you type.
- Continue until the timer ends, or click "Finish now" if you complete the passage early.
- Review your results: Gross WPM, Net WPM, and SSC-convention WPM, shown together with a plain-language explanation of each.
- Check your session's weak spots (slowest/most error-prone characters and letter-pairs) and try another passage to keep improving.
Frequently asked questions
How is my Marathi typing speed calculated?
We calculate and show three figures together: Gross WPM (every character typed, correct or not, at 5 characters per word, divided by minutes), Net WPM (only correctly typed characters count, full penalty per mistake), and SSC-convention WPM (mistakes up to 5% of your total words typed are ignored outright, the common government-exam allowance, with only mistakes beyond that threshold deducted). All three are shown together, never reduced to one unexplained number.
Is Marathi typing the same as Hindi typing since they share Devanagari script?
The underlying script and InScript key layout are the same for characters common to both languages, so skills genuinely transfer between our Hindi and Marathi tests. However, Marathi uses some additional characters beyond standard Hindi Devanagari — most notably the retroflex ळ — and Marathi-specific vocabulary and word patterns, which is why we maintain a separate, dedicated Marathi passage library rather than simply reusing Hindi passages with the language label changed.
What WPM do I need for a GCC Marathi typing certificate or MPSC exam?
Requirements vary by certificate level and exam body — Maharashtra's Government Commercial Certificate (GCC) typing exams and MPSC-administered posts each set their own specific minimum WPM and accuracy figures, so always confirm the exact requirement from the relevant board's or exam's official notification before your test date. This page shows Gross, Net, and SSC-convention WPM side by side specifically so you can compare your result against whichever methodology your target exam or certificate actually uses.
Do I need KrutiDev, Mangal, or any special font installed?
No — we self-host a Devanagari display font, so this page renders correctly in any modern browser with nothing to install. This test runs entirely in Unicode; if your specific certificate or exam still specifies practicing on a legacy non-Unicode layout like KrutiDev, be aware its key mappings differ from InScript in places, so confirm your exact required layout ahead of your exam date.
Why does my accuracy drop on matra (vowel sign) placement?
Matra attachment is a well-documented pain point across Devanagari typing generally, Marathi included, since vowel signs combine with base consonants as distinct keystrokes in InScript. Our results screen breaks errors down by category (letters, combining marks/matras, digits, punctuation) specifically so you can see whether matra accuracy, rather than overall typing speed, is your actual bottleneck.
Will a downloadable certificate be available on this site?
Yes — certificate generation is on our roadmap, designed as a session-based feature requiring no account sign-up, available once you cross a qualifying WPM and accuracy threshold. This is a different, informal certificate from an official GCC or government exam certificate, but useful for tracking your own practice progress. Until it ships, your live results screen already shows all three WPM figures so you can compare against typical thresholds today.
Troubleshooting
Typing feels laggy or characters appear out of order. This is almost always a browser/device performance issue rather than a problem with the test itself — close other heavy browser tabs, and try a different modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, and Edge are all fully supported) on a low-powered device.
The keyboard doesn't seem to match InScript, or ळ won't type correctly. Confirm your operating system's input method is genuinely set to a Marathi (or Hindi) InScript layout rather than a phonetic/transliteration input method, which uses entirely different key mappings. If ळ specifically isn't appearing, verify your system's Marathi InScript variant includes it — some generic Hindi-only keyboard configurations omit Marathi-specific characters.
The passage or UI text looks broken, or shows boxes instead of Marathi characters. The page's self-hosted Devanagari font likely failed to fully load, usually from an interrupted page load — refresh the page; if it persists, try a different, up-to-date browser.
My results didn't save. Your score is always shown on-screen even if the save-to-server call fails (e.g. a temporary network issue) — you won't lose your session's result, but a failed save means that attempt won't count toward the aggregate statistics used elsewhere on the site.
