This Telugu typing test measures your typing speed and accuracy directly in Telugu script, using the same transparent three-figure scoring approach used across every language on this site: Gross WPM (every character typed, correct or not, at the standard 5-characters-per-word rate), Net WPM (only correctly typed characters count, full penalty for every mistake), and SSC-convention WPM (the widely used "5% mistakes ignorable" allowance common to Indian government typing-skill exams). All three are shown together with a plain-language explanation on your results screen — a typing score should be something you can understand and check, not a single unexplained figure.

The test runs entirely in Unicode Telugu and is built around the InScript keyboard layout, the government-standard, CDAC-defined key mapping used across official Telugu typing exams administered by bodies such as TSPSC and APPSC. We know some typists (particularly those trained through older typing institutes) are more familiar with the RTS (Rajyam Type System) or other legacy Telugu keyboard conventions historically taught alongside typewriter-era Telugu typing certificates; while this test itself is Unicode/InScript-first — the modern, exam-relevant standard most current government tests now specify — our FAQ below covers the practical differences so you know exactly what to expect.

No special font installation is required to take this test — we self-host the Telugu display font, so the page renders correctly in any modern browser from the moment it loads, with no legacy pre-Unicode Telugu font encoding needed anywhere in the process.

Passages are drawn from a growing library of real Telugu text — general prose and vocabulary, not one recycled paragraph — so repeated practice sessions build genuine typing skill rather than passage memorisation. Choose a duration (1 to 20 minutes) to match your target exam or practice goal, start typing, and watch your live WPM and accuracy update as you go. Whether you're preparing for a Telangana or Andhra Pradesh state government exam, a clerical/data-entry role, or simply want to type Telugu faster with fewer mistakes, this test gives you an honest, transparently scored answer.

How to use this typing test

  1. Choose a test duration — 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes — matching your target exam or practice goal.
  2. Click "Start test" and type the Telugu passage shown on screen exactly as it appears, using the InScript keyboard layout.
  3. Watch your live WPM and accuracy update in real time as you type.
  4. Continue until the timer ends, or click "Finish now" if you complete the passage early.
  5. Review your results: Gross WPM, Net WPM, and SSC-convention WPM, shown together with a plain-language explanation of each.
  6. Check your session's weak spots (slowest/most error-prone characters and letter-pairs) and try another passage to keep improving.

Frequently asked questions

How is my Telugu typing speed calculated?

We calculate and show three figures together: Gross WPM (every character typed, correct or not, at 5 characters per word, divided by minutes), Net WPM (only correctly typed characters count, full penalty per mistake), and SSC-convention WPM (mistakes up to 5% of your total words typed are ignored outright, per the common government-exam allowance, with only mistakes beyond that threshold deducted). All three appear together on your results screen, never reduced to a single unexplained number.

Is this test based on InScript or the older RTS/typewriter-era Telugu layout?

This test is built around InScript, the government-standard, CDAC-defined keyboard layout used across most current official Telugu typing exams (TSPSC, APPSC, and similar bodies). Some typing institutes historically taught RTS (Rajyam Type System) or other typewriter-derived layouts alongside older-style Telugu typing certificate courses — if your specific exam or certificate still specifies one of those legacy layouts, note that its key positions differ from InScript, so confirm your exact required layout with your exam's official notification before relying solely on InScript practice.

Do I need a special Telugu font installed?

No — we self-host a Telugu Unicode display font, so this page renders correctly in any modern browser with nothing to install. Everything here uses standard Unicode Telugu; no legacy pre-Unicode font encoding is used or required anywhere in the test.

What WPM and accuracy do I need for a Telugu government exam?

Requirements vary by exam body and state — always confirm the exact minimum WPM and accuracy from your specific exam's official notification (TSPSC, APPSC, and other bodies each publish their own figures). Many Indian government typing-skill tests set thresholds in a broadly similar range across languages (commonly around 25-35 WPM at 90%+ accuracy), and we show Gross, Net, and SSC-convention WPM side by side so you can compare your result against whichever convention your exam actually uses.

Why do I lose accuracy specifically on vowel-sign or conjunct characters?

Telugu script, like other Indic scripts, uses combining vowel signs and conjunct consonant forms that are a genuinely common, specific source of typing mistakes distinct from plain-letter errors. Our results screen breaks your errors down by category (letters, combining marks, digits, punctuation) so you can see whether this specific pattern, rather than overall speed, is where your practice time is best spent.

Will a downloadable certificate be available?

Yes — certificate generation is on our roadmap, designed as a session-based feature with no account sign-up required, available once you cross a qualifying WPM and accuracy threshold. Until it ships, your live results screen already shows all three WPM figures so you can track your progress against typical exam thresholds today.

Troubleshooting

My keyboard doesn't match what the test expects. Confirm your operating system's input method is genuinely set to InScript Telugu, not a phonetic transliteration keyboard or an older typewriter-derived layout — these use different key mappings, and typing on the wrong one will produce consistently incorrect characters no matter how carefully you type.

Vowel signs or conjunct characters look wrong or detached. This is almost always a font-rendering issue rather than a typing mistake — refresh the page to let the self-hosted Telugu font finish loading fully; a partially loaded font can misrender combining forms for a moment.

Typing feels laggy on my device. Close other heavy browser tabs and try a different up-to-date browser (Chrome, Firefox, and Edge are all fully supported) — this is almost always a device/browser performance issue, not a problem with the test itself.

Boxes or missing glyphs instead of Telugu text. The self-hosted font likely failed to fully load — refresh the page; if it persists across refreshes, try a different, current browser version.
