This Tamil typing test measures your typing speed and accuracy directly in Tamil script, using the same transparent three-figure scoring approach used across every language on this site: Gross WPM (every character typed, correct or not, at the standard 5-characters-per-word rate), Net WPM (only correctly typed characters count, full penalty for every mistake), and SSC-convention WPM (the widely used "5% mistakes ignorable" allowance common to Indian government typing-skill exams). We show all three together with a plain-language explanation, because a typing score should be something you can audit and understand, not a single unexplained figure. Tamil has a somewhat different typing-layout landscape from other Indic scripts: alongside the government-standard InScript layout (CDAC-defined, and what this test is built around), Tamil also has its own well-established alternative keyboard standard, Tamil99, developed specifically for faster, more phonetically intuitive Tamil typing and preferred by many experienced Tamil typists over InScript. We've chosen InScript as our default because it's the layout most directly aligned with government exam requirements (TNPSC and similar bodies), but our FAQ below explains the practical difference between the two so you know which one your specific exam actually expects. Tamil script itself has fewer distinct consonant and vowel-sign combinations than a script like Devanagari, and this test runs entirely in Unicode — no legacy pre-Unicode font (such as older Bamini or TSCII-era layouts still seen in some older documents) is required, and no installation is needed on your device since we self-host the display font. Passages are drawn from a growing library of real Tamil text, not one recycled paragraph, so repeated practice sessions genuinely build skill instead of memorising a fixed block of text. Pick a duration, start typing, and track your live WPM and accuracy as you go — whether you're preparing for a Tamil Nadu state government exam, a clerical role, or simply want to type Tamil faster and more accurately, this test gives you an honest, transparently scored read on where you stand.
How to use this typing test
- Choose a test duration — 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes — matching your target exam or practice goal.
- Click "Start test" and type the Tamil passage shown on screen exactly as it appears, using the InScript keyboard layout.
- Watch your live WPM and accuracy update in real time as you type.
- Continue until the timer ends, or click "Finish now" if you complete the passage early.
- Review your results: Gross WPM, Net WPM, and SSC-convention WPM, shown together with a plain-language explanation of each.
- Check your session's weak spots (slowest/most error-prone characters and letter-pairs) and try another passage to keep improving.
Frequently asked questions
How is my Tamil typing speed calculated?
We calculate and show three figures together: Gross WPM (every character typed, correct or not, at 5 characters per word, divided by minutes), Net WPM (only correctly typed characters count, full penalty per mistake), and SSC-convention WPM (mistakes up to 5% of your total words typed are ignored outright, the common government-exam allowance, with only mistakes beyond that threshold deducted). We never reduce your result to a single unexplained number.
What is the difference between InScript and Tamil99 for Tamil typing?
InScript is the government-standard, CDAC-defined keyboard layout used across most official Indian-language typing exams, including this test. Tamil99 is a separate, widely respected Tamil-specific layout designed for faster, more phonetically intuitive typing, favoured by many experienced Tamil typists for everyday use outside exam contexts. If your target exam (e.g. a TNPSC-administered test) specifies InScript, practicing on this test — which is InScript-based — directly transfers. If you already type on Tamil99 for other purposes, be aware the key positions differ meaningfully from InScript, so don't assume your Tamil99 muscle memory will carry over without adjustment.
Do I need a specific Tamil font installed to take this test?
No — we self-host a Tamil Unicode display font, so the page renders correctly in any modern browser with nothing to install. This test does not use or require any older pre-Unicode Tamil font encoding (such as Bamini or TSCII-era fonts sometimes still found in older documents); everything here is standard Unicode Tamil throughout.
What WPM is considered good for a Tamil typing exam?
Requirements vary by exam body — always check your specific exam's official notification (TNPSC and other bodies each set their own figures) for the exact minimum WPM and accuracy required. Many Indian government typing-skill tests set thresholds in a broadly similar range across languages (commonly around 25-35 WPM at 90%+ accuracy), and this test shows Gross, Net, and SSC-convention WPM side by side so you can compare against whichever convention your exam actually uses.
Why is my accuracy lower than expected even though I feel confident typing Tamil?
Our results screen breaks errors down by category (letters, combining vowel signs, digits, punctuation) rather than just a flat error count, since combining vowel-sign attachment is a common, specific source of mistakes across Indic-script typing generally. Reviewing that breakdown — rather than just the headline accuracy percentage — usually shows exactly where your practice time is best spent.
Will a downloadable certificate be available?
Yes — certificate generation is on our roadmap, built as a session-based feature that won't require account sign-up, available once you cross a qualifying WPM and accuracy threshold. Until it ships, your live results screen already gives you all three WPM figures so you can check your progress against typical exam thresholds today.
Troubleshooting
My keyboard doesn't match what the test expects. Confirm your operating system's input method is genuinely set to InScript Tamil. If you normally type using Tamil99 or a phonetic transliteration keyboard, the key positions are meaningfully different from InScript, and typing on the wrong layout will produce consistently incorrect characters regardless of how carefully you type — this is the single most common cause of unexpectedly low Tamil typing scores.
Vowel signs or combining marks look detached or wrong. This is usually a font-loading issue rather than a typing mistake — refresh the page to let the self-hosted Tamil font finish loading completely; a partially loaded font can misrender combining marks for a moment.
Typing feels laggy on my device. Close other heavy browser tabs and try a different up-to-date browser (Chrome, Firefox, and Edge are all fully supported) — this is almost always a device/browser performance issue, not a problem with the test itself.
Boxes or missing characters instead of Tamil text. The self-hosted font likely failed to fully load — refresh the page; if it persists, try a different, current browser version.
