Who’s Behind This
India Typing Online is built and maintained by the India Typing Team, a small group focused on free, exam-ready typing practice for Indian government exam aspirants. We built this site because most typing tools online either cost money, bury you in ads, or don’t match what exams actually test, so we built one that does.
Five languages today, fifteen tomorrow
We launched with five MVP languages — Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi — chosen because together they cover a large share of India’s government-exam typing-test candidates and a genuine spread of scripts (Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu). That is a deliberate starting point, not a ceiling. Language support here is built on a taxonomy, not a hardcoded list, specifically so we can add each of the remaining official Indian languages later by adding a language entry, not by rebuilding the site. Nothing about how a typing test, the scoring engine, or the AI Coach works is specific to any single script.
Honest scoring, not one black-box number
Every test on this site reports three figures side by side instead of a single blended score: Gross WPM (every character you typed, correct or not), Net WPM (only what you typed correctly, full penalty for every mistake), and SSC-convention WPM (the small-error-allowance rule used across SSC, Railway, and Banking-style government exams). We show the method, not just the result — a typing score you cannot audit is not one you can trust while preparing for a real exam.
The AI Coach
This is the feature we are proudest of, and the one no competitor we researched offers anything like. After a test, you can request an AI-generated coaching report that looks at your own per-character and per-bigram error rates and typing rhythm — never your raw keystrokes, only the aggregated pattern — and turns them into a short, specific explanation of what is actually holding you back, plus two or three concrete drills to fix it. That report is generated by Claude, Anthropic’s AI model, when we can afford to make the call, under a strict monthly spending cap so the feature can never run past its budget. Once that cap is reached for the month, or when your session’s pattern closely matches one we have already generated a coaching narrative for, you still get a real, useful report — either a cached narrative from a closely matching session, or a rule-based one built directly from your own stats — never an error message or a paywall.
That is also phase one of a longer plan. The anonymized, aggregated character/bigram statistics every test contributes to are the training data for a self-learning engine we intend to build once there is enough real usage data — one that will eventually run on our own infrastructure with no ongoing AI-API cost at all. The Claude-powered coach available today is the bootstrap for that engine, not the end state. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what is and is not collected along the way.
Free, publicly-verifiable certificates
Score a rank of B or better on a test and you can claim a free typing certificate on the spot — no account required. Every certificate gets its own private verification code, so anyone you share it with (an employer, an institution) can confirm it is genuine without ever being able to browse or search anyone else’s certificates.
Where we are headed
A guided Typing Tutor is on our roadmap, alongside growing from five languages to all fifteen official Indian languages. If you would like to tell us what to build next, or you have found something broken, see our Contact page.
