About this exam
RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) Undergraduate recruits for posts like Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk, Trains Clerk, and the two typist-designated posts this page is actually about: Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist. If your post isn't one of those two, you don't need to sit the Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST) -- check the CEN for your specific post before assuming otherwise.
CBTST runs on the same framework RRB uses for the NTPC Graduate track: type at least 300 words in English or 250 words in Hindi inside a 10-minute window, or your transcript isn't evaluated. It's qualifying only -- a bar you clear or don't, run after CBT-2 has already shortlisted you on merit.
One honest note before you rely on this page: we verified the CBTST framework below against RRB's signed, letterhead notice for the Graduate track, and cross-checked that the Undergraduate track uses the identical WPM/word-count/font figures across several independent citations of RRB's own CEN 06/2024 CBTST notice -- but every direct link to that UG-specific signed PDF we tried was unreachable this session. See the sourcing note below for exactly what that means for this page.
Typing rules for this exam
English is the default typing language unless you select Hindi. Hindi candidates need to be comfortable with the KrutiDev or Mangal font -- the same two options named in RRB's Graduate-track notice, and every UG citation we cross-checked names the identical pair.
The session runs in the same three parts as the Graduate CBTST: a short typing-practice warm-up, a break, then the 10-minute timed test that's actually evaluated. Candidates who don't type the full passage at least once within the 10 minutes are disqualified, and a transcript that falls short of 300 words (English) or 250 words (Hindi) in that time isn't evaluated at all.
Editing tools -- backspace, delete, any way of correcting what you've already typed -- are not permitted, matching the Graduate track exactly.
Sourcing note: we independently fetched and verified RRB's signed CBTST notice for the NTPC Graduate track (CEN 05/2024) and confirmed its rules text is what current citations of the Undergraduate track's own CEN 06/2024 notice report too -- but we were not able to independently fetch a signed UG-specific PDF ourselves this session, despite trying several official RRB zonal-website links. One detail we're deliberately not stating as fact here because of that gap: the exact break length between the practice minute and the timed test (we have two conflicting figures for it from different sources). Treat the WPM, word-count, formula, and font figures on this page as reliable by cross-source consistency, and check your own e-call letter/RRB regional site for anything schedule-specific.
How errors are calculated
Based on the same formula RRB's Graduate-track notice states directly, and which UG-track citations report identically: mistakes split into full mistakes and half mistakes, with 5% of your total words typed forgiven before the final count.
Total Mistakes = Full mistakes + (Half mistakes ÷ 2)
Final count of mistakes = Total Mistakes − 5% of total words typed
Typing speed:
Typing Speed = [Total words typed − (Final count of mistakes × 10)] ÷ Time (minutes)
Worked example (RRB's own, from the Graduate-track notice): typing 400 words in 10 minutes with a final count of 10 mistakes gives (400 − (10 × 10)) ÷ 10 = 30 WPM, exactly the English qualifying speed.
Practice for this exam
30-day preparation plan
Week 1 -- practice with zero corrections available. Backspace and delete aren't usable in the real test, so switch off auto-correct and force full passages through without going back to fix anything you notice mid-typing. That's the actual condition you'll be under.
Week 2 -- learn what the formula actually forgives. 5% of your words typed are forgiven as errors before counting against you, and each remaining mistake costs 10 words off your final speed -- track your real full/half mistake count each run instead of guessing at your accuracy.
Week 3 -- practice restarting the passage, not just finishing it. If you finish before time's up in the real test, you restart from the beginning and keep going until the full window closes. Most practice tools stop the moment you finish a passage -- deliberately keep typing past that point in your own sessions.
Week 4 -- run the full session sequence, back to back. Warm-up minute, short break, then a full 10-minute timed run -- repeat that sequence at least 3 times this week so the shift from warm-up to the timed portion feels routine by test day.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Practicing with backspace/delete on, then losing rhythm on test day when correcting mistakes isn't possible at all.
- Assuming every NTPC Undergraduate post requires CBTST -- it's only mandatory for Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist.
- Stopping when the passage ends instead of restarting it -- the full 10 minutes is what's measured, not one pass through the text.
- Choosing Hindi without confirming comfort in KrutiDev or Mangal specifically, since those are the two fonts named.
- Not checking your own e-call letter for the exact break timing and schedule, since that detail can vary by cycle and isn't something this page states as a fixed number.
Frequently asked questions
Who needs to take the RRB NTPC Undergraduate CBTST?
Only candidates shortlisted for Junior Clerk cum Typist or Accounts Clerk cum Typist. Other NTPC Undergraduate posts like Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk or Trains Clerk don't require it -- check your specific post in the CEN.
What's the minimum typing speed for RRB NTPC Undergraduate CBTST?
30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi, with a minimum of 300 words (English) or 250 words (Hindi) typed within the 10-minute test -- the same targets as the NTPC Graduate track.
Is the Undergraduate CBTST the same as the Graduate one?
The WPM targets, word counts, error formula, and font requirements are the same framework, based on our independently verified Graduate-track document and consistent citations of the UG track's own notice. The CEN number, applicable posts, and exam schedule are different -- see our separate RRB NTPC Graduate typing test page for that track.
Is backspace allowed in the RRB NTPC Undergraduate typing test?
No -- editing tools for correcting typed matter aren't permitted, matching the Graduate-track rule.
What font do I need for Hindi typing in the Undergraduate CBTST?
KrutiDev or Mangal, per RRB's standing CBTST framework -- the same two fonts named for the Graduate track and consistently reported for the Undergraduate cycle.
Why does this page say some details aren't fully verified?
We independently fetched and confirmed RRB's signed CBTST notice for the NTPC Graduate track, but every link we tried to a UG-specific signed PDF this session was unreachable. The WPM/word-count/formula/font figures here match what current UG-track citations report and what we verified directly for Graduate, so we're confident in them -- but we're not going to state a specific break-duration figure as fact when our sources disagree on it. That's a deliberate choice, not an oversight.
