SSC CHSL Typing Test 2026: What You Actually Need to Know

The SSC CHSL Typing Test is the qualifying skill test for LDC and JSA posts, held as part of Tier 2. It sounds simple, hit the required speed and you pass, but one detail trips up more candidates than the speed requirement itself: the font.

SSC CHSL Typing Test Speed Requirements

For LDC and JSA posts, you choose your typing medium when you apply, and the speed bar changes depending on which you pick.

For DEO posts, speed is measured differently, in key depressions per hour rather than WPM.

Why the Font Matters More Than Most Candidates Realize

Here’s the part that catches people out. If you’re typing in Hindi, SSC CHSL 2026’s official notification requires Mangal font on the InScript layout, not Kruti Dev, no matter how fast or accurate your Kruti Dev typing is.

This matters because a huge number of candidates, especially anyone who learned typing on an older Remington-style keyboard or through Kruti Dev-based coaching, practice for months on the wrong font entirely. Kruti Dev isn’t real Unicode Hindi text, it’s English characters dressed up to look like Devanagari. Type fast and accurately in Kruti Dev, and on exam day you’d still fail, because the exam software expects genuine Unicode Mangal input, and the two aren’t interchangeable at the keystroke level.

If you’ve been training in Kruti Dev, switch to Mangal/InScript well before your exam date. The finger positions are different enough that muscle memory doesn’t transfer directly.

Backspace Rules

Candidates may use arrow keys/backspace key to correct wrongly typed word(s) or remove additional typed word(s) before proceeding to complete the master text.

How to Practice for the Real Thing

The closest way to simulate exam conditions is to practice on the same font and layout the exam actually uses; Mangal, InScript, Unicode, not Kruti Dev. Take a free SSC CHSL-style Hindi typing test built on real InScript keys, with your Gross WPM, Net WPM, and SSC-convention WPM shown side by side so you know exactly where you stand against the 30 WPM cutoff.

FAQ

Is Kruti Dev accepted for the SSC CHSL Hindi typing test?

No. SSC CHSL 2026 requires Mangal font on the InScript layout for Hindi. Kruti Dev is not accepted, regardless of your typing speed in it.

What’s the difference between LDC/JSA typing test and DEO skill test?

LDC/JSA is measured in words per minute (35 English / 30 Hindi). DEO is measured in key depressions per hour (8,000 for standard DEO).

Can I switch from English to Hindi medium after applying?

No, you choose your typing medium at the time of application, and it can’t be changed afterward.
