CPCT Typing Test (Madhya Pradesh)
The CPCT typing test decides whether you qualify for clerical and data entry jobs across Madhya Pradesh. Most candidates clear the computer knowledge section without much trouble. The typing section is where many fail.
The bigger problem is bad information. Some websites claim you need 25 WPM in Hindi. Others say the exam disables the backspace key. This guide sets the record straight and gives you a clear plan to pass.
What Is the CPCT Typing Test?
CPCT stands for Computer Proficiency Certification Test. MAP_IT, the Madhya Pradesh Agency for Promotion of Information Technology, conducts it for the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
Unlike SSC or RRB exams, CPCT combines a computer knowledge test and a typing test in one sitting. MP government departments require a CPCT score card for posts such as:
- Data Entry Operator
- Assistant Grade 3
- Lower and Upper Division Clerk
- Typist
- Patwari
You clear CPCT once and use the same score card across multiple MP recruitments. You can find official notices and exam dates on the CPCT website.
CPCT Typing Test Pattern at a Glance
| Section | Format | Time | Minimum to qualify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer proficiency (MCQ) | 75 questions | 75 minutes | 38 marks (50%) |
| English typing | Type a displayed passage | 15 minutes | 30 NWPM |
| Hindi typing | Type a displayed passage | 15 minutes | 20 NWPM |
NWPM means net words per minute: only the words you type correctly count.
Candidates with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) get 5 extra minutes in each typing section. The speed requirement stays the same.
CPCT English Typing Test Rules
The CPCT English typing test runs for 15 minutes on a standard QWERTY keyboard. You need at least 30 NWPM to qualify.
- No special layout. You type on the same keyboard layout you use every day.
- Word highlighting and auto-scroll help you keep your place in the passage.
- Target 35+ NWPM in practice. Exam nerves usually cost you a few words per minute, so build a buffer.
CPCT Typing Test Rules for Hindi
The CPCT Hindi typing section also lasts 15 minutes, with a lower cutoff of 20 NWPM.
The font matters. CPCT uses Mangal (Unicode) for Hindi. You choose one of two keyboard layouts when you register:
- Remington Gail: a typewriter-style layout, popular with candidates who learned typing years ago
- InScript: the standard Indian government layout, which groups vowels and consonants logically
Your layout choice is final. You cannot switch layouts after you submit your application, so decide before you apply.
Kruti Dev is not an option. If you learned Hindi typing on Kruti Dev, switch to Remington Gail or InScript well before your exam date. Our guide to InScript vs Remington helps you pick the right one, and our Remington Gail typing guide explains that layout in depth.
New to Hindi typing? Learn InScript. It follows a logical pattern, and our free Hindi typing tutor teaches it step by step.
Already know InScript? Take a free Hindi typing test and set the timer to 15 minutes to practice under CPCT conditions.
Is Backspace Allowed in the CPCT Typing Test?
Yes. CPCT uses an unrestricted typing format. You can use backspace, delete, and the arrow keys to fix mistakes at any time before the timer ends.
Some websites say CPCT disables backspace. That claim is wrong, and practicing without backspace can actually slow you down on exam day.
Use backspace wisely, though. Every correction costs you time. Fix mistakes you spot immediately, but don’t go back several lines to hunt for errors.
How the CPCT Typing Test Is Scored
CPCT checks your typing word by word. Each word either matches the passage exactly or it doesn’t.
- Correct words count toward your score.
- Wrong or missed words don’t count.
- Your net speed = correct words ÷ 15 minutes.
Example: You type 500 words in the English section, and 40 contain mistakes. Your net speed is 460 ÷ 15 = 30.7 NWPM. You pass.
CPCT then converts your net speed into a scaled score between 50% and 100%. Hitting exactly 30 NWPM (English) or 20 NWPM (Hindi) earns 50%, the qualifying mark. Higher speeds earn higher scores, which can help in competitive recruitments.

CPCT Typing Test vs Other Government Typing Tests
| Exam | English speed | Hindi speed | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP CPCT | 30 NWPM | 20 NWPM | 15 min |
| SSC CHSL | 35 WPM | 30 WPM | 10 min |
| RRB NTPC | 30 WPM | 25 WPM | 10 min |
CPCT has the longest test (15 minutes) but the lowest Hindi cutoff. Stamina matters more than raw speed.
4-Week CPCT Typing Test Practice Plan
Week 1: Accuracy first. Practice the home row without looking at the keyboard. Aim for 95% accuracy, whatever your speed.
Week 2: Full keyboard. Practice common words and punctuation. Keep accuracy above 95%.
Week 3: Build stamina. Take two full 15-minute tests every day. Most candidates practice for only 5 minutes, then tire out in the real exam.
Week 4: Exam simulation. Take a daily 15-minute Hindi typing test under real conditions, plus a 15-minute English session. Push for 35+ NWPM in English and 25+ NWPM in Hindi.
Practice on the right layout. If you chose Remington Gail, never practice on InScript, and vice versa. Muscle memory doesn’t transfer between layouts.
CPCT Score Card Validity
Your CPCT score card stays valid for 7 years from the exam date, according to the MP General Administration Department’s order. It’s accepted across MP government recruitments that require CPCT. If you want a higher score, you can retake the exam.
